I'm in Massachusetts and it gets below zero here in the winter. I have a screened aviary type coop that in winter I put plastic over the screening. The 5 Silkies tend to perch low or on the floor. I make sure there is plenty of bedding. I let the chickens free roam year round. They pretty much stay in when there is a lot of snow on the ground but they do go out when the snow is light. I've never lost a Silkie. I'd want them to be atleast 5-6 months old going into winter.
