Hi, when I got my Pekins, they are each about a year old, rescues, I tried putting them in their own "barn", nesting box, etc, and enclosed pen, after 3 days I let them free range with all the other kritters, at dusk, both the drake and hen waddled right into the "chicken barn" this is where the juvenile chickens and 2 of the guinea hens sleep. They both settled down in one of the corners where a bale of hay/straw had been laid down and they have been sleeping there ever since.
The Muscovy couple (Mork and Mindy) did pretty much the same when they came, I tried setting up a low shelf with straw under it and enclosed on three sides, since they like to hide their eggs, also a seperate sleeping area with roosts, as they like to sleep up high, and so on and so on. They also decided that sleeping with the rest of the crew in the "chicken barn"
was a good idea. They do sleep on the ledge that runs the length of the structure, but as I said they like to roost, the hen ignored the lovely nest box I made for her and decided that the ledge under some straw was the best place for the nest.
So in answer to your question, your set up sounds fine, but at the end of the day they will decide what they want to do and when and how.
Good luck, they are lots of fun, its hard not to smile when your watching a duck waddle across the yard.

Has anyone made / had a bed area for ducks that they actually use? I just got a shipping crate that would be a little raised and if I take down one side to make the entrance, seems like it would be a great "bed" for them at night. I'm wondering if it will be worth my work. I tried to use a big old shallow drawer but they just nested beside it.
Thanks!
