Re: [CHICKENS-101] chick feed and manure questions

I put oyster shell in a dish by the feeder and feed all chick 20% (with animal protein); when that is gone (chicks at 10-12 weeks of age) move down to chick 18%. My hens are happier, make bigger eggs and lay more regularly and longer on 18 and 20%.
Do your chickens have salmonella?  If yes, get rid of them asap and start over.  If no, how do you expect to get salmonella in your garden if your chickens do not have it?
You can contact your local NPIP dept of ag to find a pullorum/typhoid tester. Some states have a mail in program that is not hard to do, to test your flocks for free.  Make sure you only buy from NPIP hatcheries and breeders.

I am one of many state testers for Michigan and volunteer in the summer at the local fair.
I put dirty bedding/chicken manure on the garden up to the last week in April. After that I compost the manure and dirty bedding in piles about 4 ft high, with a shovel of dirt or two in the middle, and lime on top.

We have 17 baby hens, 8 wks old. They are on chick started feed now. When we put them with the rest of the flock in a few weeks, how do we handle the feed situation? Can the young 'uns just go from starter to layer? If we put grower feed out when we move them, will the older hens eat the grower instead of the layer? Will that affect the egg production?
Does putting fresh chicken manure on the veggie garden have any ill side-effects, such as salmonella?
Thanks for sharing all of your experience!
