<<Do the pine shavings break down in a compost pile better than straw? I am also wondering where to find it.>>
I don't think there will be much difference in break-down time, based on what happens in the horse manure pile (I use quite a combination of beddings). Shavings might take a little longer, but if it's already somewhat exposed to the weather and chicken manure, it will already begin to break down a little before you add it with the compost pile.
Check your local feed store for shavings--get a whole bale, not one of the little plastic bags in the gerbil-and-hamster aisle. If there's a sawmill anywhere near you, they may have either shavings or sawdust, which you could get with your own bags or barrels, or a truckload. Or, if you have a friend who's a carpenter/woodworker, see if sawdust/shavings can be saved for you (just be sure there's no pressure-treated material--so don't ask for the saw-material from Home Depot!) Be sure not to get cedar shavings--it's supposed to be as bad for chickens as black walnut shavings are for horses.
