Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Winter Litter

I have switched from wheat straw to pine shavings, also.  I find it neater, cleaner and seems easier to get into place.

I use litter year round in my cement floored show pens and in the coop(s) in the winter. The main coops are on rocky dirt for floors and in Kansas the snow when it happens doesn't usually last too long, thank God. I use wood shavings/sawdust. I work at a wood shop a couple blocks away so it's convenient and free so perfect for me. Before that I used to buy bales of pine shavings at the farm store. Seems to have the same effect. I find it easier to clean than straw which can also get moldy. I use it in the nest boxes as well and the eggs stay looking clean.
Is your solarium an enclosed run kind of thing then? I would think shavings or even pellets would work well for you with shavings being a bit more affordable.
Hope that helps. Your hens sound lucky to have such a nice human.
