Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Winter Litter

Charlene, Your concrete is what you want your coop on. You can white wash it and power wash it once a year in the summer. How ever you build your coop you want to be able to empty it and power wash or hose wash it out once a year. After you power wash you use a disinfectant to wash it with a sprayer, then an insecticide. Fans to dry it quickly, white wash the floors again, repaint the walls with a small paint gun with lower odor kilz, then put in your pine bedding. Build the door ways where you have to step up because you will want your bedding deep.  a fan with a hygrometer to turn it on is a nice additon because it will help keep the moisture out.

I have been standing in my kitchen watching my neighbor muck out his chicken coop. Our temperature today is unseasonably warm at 44 degrees so a great time to be mucking it out. I am learning a fair amount from watching him and with this group. It looks like he is using straw for his litter. He spent most of the morning cleaning up. There are some mighty happy chickens over there. I am wondering what would be the better floor material to use. I have read some use linoleum, glassboard (I am not sure what that is), and plywood.
What are your opinions? Our coop and run will sit on our cement pad although I would prefer it out in the yard.
