"Answerable to the court" is sometimes an oxymoron. It involves a lot of time, a great deal of money, emotions, etc. that some people do not have. Lots to think about. Also with no guarantee that the situation will be acceptable to or in favor of the wronged person. It's not limited to this issue either, but some very sad issues like child support recovery. Then you have the emotions involved from the disaster of a lost pet/animal. I have many mixed feelings about "LAW" and "Authority", while living by them and teaching them to my family. This from the mom of a federal agent and an auxilary police officer (me), and a couple of military family members. Just my 2 cents worth. Not advocating anyone take the law into their own hands. The wildlife officer may have authority to make an on-the-spot decision, but the officer's actions are always reviewable by a judge.
No one can come on your property without a warrant or court order and kill anything without being answerable to the courts.
It's in the US Constitution.
