He is probably just feeling his oats and maybe he just doesn't want you around his hens.
I have one that has always been a sweetie but he turns into a monster when his favorite hen is around. He is tiny so not a problem but it was a shock the first time he came after me.
My faverolles roo was very sweet always and wasn't a bit mean.
