RE: [CHICKENS-101] dandelions

Well, knowing the nature of weeds, they would probably thrive if you DIDN’T want them there!  ;~D

Sounds good.  Let us know how it works.  Do you grow comfrey for them, too?

Purslane and dandelions do well here – and I mow them pretty regularly.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] dandelions

See if you can picture my plan for a dandelion patch/garden for feed for my chickens. Dandelions like tilled soil. I am going to till an area wide enough for 3 rows and 150ft, maybe 200 ft long. I am going to plant seed; I have kids picking dandelion seed heads for 5 cents each/$5.00 per hundred seed heads.

Three rows of dandelion seed planted, fertilized, kept tilled, and watered like a regular garden. When they get up in height I'll use a mower w/ mulching blades, set on medium high, with a bagger to mow them. Every time the dandelions get tall enough I'll mow them and have chopped greens for my chickens. I'll keep them weeded except for the chickweed. I'll gather up the chickweed with the dandelions. When they bloom I'll collect the seed heads right as they are going to open, till areas my pens, and plant the seeds in the chicken pens. What do you think? Will it work?
