RE: [CHICKENS-101] Re: chicken feed ingredients.

My hens love mealworms, too. In fact, I raise them for them to ensure they
have a good supply. :) When I was reading about raising mealworms, I found
this:

http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showthread.php?21425-Difference-between-mealw
orms-and-giant-mealworms

and this: http://www.exoticnutrition.com/howtorame.html

an excerpt from the above link: "Do not buy "giant" mealworms, as they may
have been treated with an insect growth hormone to discourage them from
morphing into beetles, so they will grow larger. If giant mealworms do morph
into beetles, they will be sterile. . . "

So, my advice for people who want to be organic, do not buy supersized
mealworms. By raising them myself, I know my mealworms are organically
raised. They are easy to raise, just takes time to really get them going.
Also, the hens like the beetles as well as the worms. :)

I have found that my chickens ADORE mealworms. They got dried mealworms
first, and went insane.
Then I found live "superworms" (giant mealworms) at the localpet shop.
I have six POL red star pullets, and they fought over those 50
superworms, even playing tug-a-war over them.
It's too bad the live ones are so expensive (50 for $5.75)...!
The dried ones are much cheaper through this website:
www.mealwormsbythepound.com
I haven't ordered from them, yet, but I'm planning to do so, soon.
If you have more chickens than my paltry half-dozen, you'll need more.
Is it a coincidence that they started laying the day after their first
mealworm snack?
