Hi everyone,
I noticed 9 days ago that my hens had lice. Many, many lice -- yuck. I feel terrible for not noticing sooner and noticed they were getting a bit thin, so I had wormed them using the Worminator drops a couple weeks ago. I quickly cleaned out the coop, powdered it down with both DE and garden dust. Dusted the vents with garden dust. All lice gone (for now) and I did lose one of our favorite hens. Just found her dead in the coop. We had another favorite one separated at the time w/ what I think was an ongoing abdomen problem that began around Easter; probably tumors or some weird disease. ALl my hens are over 5 yrs old. So now I have hens with the eggs on the base of the feathers and it's been 9 days since I dusted them. Should I do it again perhaps tonight (no eggs have hatched yet at far as I can see)? And do I have to clean out the coop again? I hope that the garden dust didn't kill my hen and that it was just my slow response to the lice problem. I hope that stuff is safe! I'd use just DE this time around if it'll be effective for the next generation of lice to come...
Thanks for any advice you can offer,
Kristen
