Re: [CHICKENS-101] I lost my first chick!

<<Our temporary house chicken actually went after our house cats - even surrounded the chicken still went after each one and they were petrified after that of her!>>

I've found that, too. I'm sure chicks would be a different matter, but from the time my original flock first went outside, our cat has been, well, careful! the entire group usually closes ranks and causes the kitty to make dignified retreat. Well, usually dignified <g>! Then again, I've seen her return the goose, causing equal squawk and vertical launch....

Last winter, I lost one--would have had no idea how if I hadn't been at the right place/right time. We'd had a good foot or more of snow, and I had cleared a path for the chickens to go from their coop to the main barn (indoor playground) first thing in the morning, which they were pleased to use. I'd continued snow-blowing the dooryard, and saw what appeared to be a chicken having a fit in the deep snow alongside the path. Turns out it was a weasel that had grabbed her--it dove under the truck and popped out several times, swearing at me (and narrowly getting missed by a snow shovel--I'd've gotten him if I hadn't been careful of not denting the truck). Chicken was apparently not badly hurt, but obviously in shock. I carried her down to the horses' stalls, where she spent the day huddled up. When I checked on her towards dusk, she was gone, never made it to the coop, so we never knew what actually happened. I assume the weasel came back, although

we found no signs.
