They are not possessed, it is perfectly normal. Mine have always free ranged, but I learned early on to fence the flowers and the veggie garden, as they made lovely little "dust"dirt beds for themselves in the middle of the flowers, uprooting the bulbs, etc. The made short work of the herb garden and did a number on all three berry patches. Since I wanted them to free range as it was beneficial both to me and to the chickens, it just made sense to fence off the area's where I didn't want them. The advantage to the free ranging is anyone would be hard pressed to find a bug anywhere on the property. Between the hens and the guineas I haven't seen a tick or any other bug all year.
Sorry you had to find out about their "gardening habits" the hard way.

Hello all
So, I started letting the girls out during the day, our dog sits out with them and keeps an eye on them :)
Well, that all got restricted back to the pen as they totally destroyed Mama's garden.
In my garden where I grow hops, beans, peas, tomatoes and artichokes, no problem, they scratched and ate and whatever, but in Mama's garden, they tore up everything, ripped strawberry plants out of the ground, completely uproot all of her flowers, just made a total mess.
So, is this normal? Or are my birds possessed and I need to call the priest?
