Re: [CHICKENS-101] How cold is too cold?

If it's been going down to 40's already, she'll probably be just fine except for the predator problem.  It's mostly a matter of adaptation.  If they've had some cooling down time, they adjust to it very well.

Yes, some sides for weather protection would be much better if you can manage it, even one side.  Depending on the weather, of course.

We had an inch of snow last night over here in NYS, and usually the chickens just go out and play in it.  Don't even have to water them, they eat the snow and leave the water in the dish.  Tastes better, you know?  Adds a little dirt flavoring!

However, remember that they are birds, not people.  They can maintain themselves just fine as long as they get enough to eat, and they will need to eat more, maybe quite a lot more.

You could go get one of those sheets of plastic and drape it over the top if you'll sleep better.  I got a couple at the checkout at Tractor Supply this week, 2 for $5.  The blue ones, not the greatest but cheap.
But they'll eat it in the morning, have to go out and take it off.

I wouldn't worry, they'll be fine, really!

This is Texas...... at what temperature should I start worrying about my chickens? I have one really young hen (her two buds got eaten) that roosts all by herself. She does not roost with the bigger hens and I'm kind of worried about her. I started trying to winterize the coop some last night by putting plastic up on at least one side but I ran out of staples. It is a temporary coop anyway. I figured clear plastic would at least let some light in since I don't have lights. The lowest it has been at night is in the high 40s. Too cold for me lol!

Thanks,
Em
