Hi, everyone. I'm mostly new to the group but have been lurking for a week or so. I just started recently on my chicken journey and it has been interesting so far. It started 3 years ago with me begging my husband to build me a coop. He said yes. So three years later I drug my 13 year old son outside with his tools and told him that me and him were going to do it. So we did. My husband finished it up for us though, so he's still on my good list. I bought 10 2 week old chicks. I brought them in at night and put them in a little enclosed area during the day. One day while i was gone my husband called to tell me that something got into their little area and killed them all. I was devistated but recovered. My husband and neighbor rebuilt the area around the coop and made it safer so I bought 10 more. Then one by one they started to die. I called my chicken lady and told her what happened, she had also had some die from that batch so she called the hatchery. They guessed at the problem but said they would ship her out 50 new chicks. That's when she told me that she was done selling chicks since she was about to move so she was "just gonna give them all" to me. LOL. I was shocked but I said ok. My husband thought I was nuts but said "bring 'em on". The day they arrived she called me to tell me that the hatchery did not send 50 after all, they sent 65!! I still took them all. But she mis-counted, there were actually 67 :) I had two cousins and a neighbor who between the 3 took about 40 off my hands. Then 4 died. So now I am the current owner of 24 five week old chicks, plus 4 from the original 7 week old chicks, plus Elvis my Guinea, plus 2 rabbits, 3 dogs, 4 cats, 3 kids and a husband. Needless to say, it's not usually boring around here. I have posted pictures under Melissa's Chicks. Please weigh in with your opinions on breeds. Some of them I think I know, but most I don't. I wound up with several Cochins (or at least something like a cochin, they have feathers on their feet). I would love to know what they are though.
