When I was keeping one bale of hay at a time for my rabbits, when I lived in the ‘burbs, I kept it is one of those large Rubbermaid totes. (the same type of totes I make brooders out of) It kept it clean, dry and I felt it protected it from insects and rodents. (although I know they can chew through them if they are hungry enough) It also kept it from spreading all over where I didn’t want it.
Now that we are on a farm, and we have close to 500 bales of hay at a time….I have given up the idea of keeping them in totes. LOL! ;-)

Yes Catherine, my local feed store manager suggested the alfalfa. Do you have trouble with mice and rats possibly nesting in it? I'll keep mine in a shed near the coop. Haven't seen a mouse yet out there ( coop or shed ) but we've got mice in the house all year long. Always at least a couple and we're overrun with chipmunks outside. Come to think of it since Irene, haven't seen nearly as many chipmunks.
