[CHICKENS-101] ]How many chickens in a 10x10 coop?? Now enrichment, also! :)

I made myself a promise to keep it to 12 chickens...partly because I know my personality and would just keep adding! - and partly because I was worried aobut the size of my coop...but then I saw someone who was getting rid of 2 beautiful sliver-laced Wyandottes...... :) I ended up not adding them, but it did make me curious as to how much space was necessary. I hate for my animals to feel cramped! The horses have 2.5 acres of pasture and are never in their stalls (they have 60x120 runs for bad weather) my birds all have cages that are at least 2x the recommended size and my dog has the run of our yard and the neighbors (with their permission, of course!).

I live in Ohio, so I was also thinking of ways to keep them occipied during the winter. They will have their 10x10 coop, 12x30 barn aisle and hopefully another 12x12 stall to play in (if I can maange to sell my pony). I am already raising some crickets as treats during the times they will not be able to free range, was going to fill small baby pools with straw/dirt for dust bathing and foraging opportunities. Was also going to get a few hanging treat balls that I get for the horses and see how they went over.. anyone else have suggestions?? The horses have slow-feed hay nets and that ptetty much keeps them happy, along with the hanging treat balls and jolly balls.....but I have never done the chicken thing before! :)

Living in a cold clime requiring lock up for the winter changes how much room they'll need (per bird) in order to be comfortable. Also with winter lock up, poop load should be considered in figuring space. With birds at capacity, more poop means more cleaning.

Us Northerners have to consider how many times a month we'll need to Schlepp through 3 foot of snow with snot freezing on our faces while wrestling with a wheel barrow full of chickenshit. So in my case, less is more ;)
