Well is the 4X6 ft coop their entire space?  Part is the run and part the enclosed area?  Or is there an attached run?  Each chicken should have 4 sq feet in the coop and 8 sq feet in their run.  So you could put at the most 2 chickens in the coop if that's all they have to be in. 

I have 6 chickens in a 258 sq ft  run area, but their coop is only 4 sq ft.  So they have plenty of run space but do not have a large shelter space.

I am curious to know how much space each chicken needs in a coop.
There is a rule of thumb for the number of fish per gallon of water
is there the same for chickens?  How many chickens would fit in a 4x6' coop?
