For the above--check your spam folder (I know at least one person did answer).  My e-mail fairly often sends posts from this group to spam--including my OWN posts! 
 
Yes, they will freeze, so you neeed to come up with an alternative for cold weather.  I wonder if heat tape around the tube from the 5-gallon bucket to the cup would work?  If the chickens could be prevented from picking it apart?  Certainly a small bucket heater ought to keep that part liquid.
