Re: [CHICKENS-101] should I move my brooding hen now or after her egg hatches?

I'd wait until the chick hatches. The problem with the nest being so far off the ground is the chick can hatch and fall out. At night, during the dark, at day 19.5 I'd put a grate or piece of fence over the front of the nest box. Just make sure you check it every few hours during the day for pipping noises. Is the nest box large enough to add a coop cup and coop feed dish?  You could lock her in when you are gone and pick up her broody poops. When  you are home take the fencing/grate off so she can get out.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] should I move my brooding hen now or after her egg hatches?

hi all,
I'm letting one of my broody hens set on one egg. The problem is her nest box is about 4.5 feet off the ground. I want to give her and her future chick a safe place to settle at night and plan to place a dog crate on the floor beneath the nest box. The hen house is completely secure and safe so predators will not be a threat. Should I move her and her egg now (she's been setting since the 15th) or should I wait until the chick hatches and then move them both. I expext that I'll have to secure them in the crate with food and water for a couple days to "train" her to use it.
Thanks Patty
