These really are great in the summer. You can also dump ice into the bucket or frozen bottles of water to help cool down the water.
My dh has been making these and we’ve determined that these will be great for summer, especially since the birds drink so much more.
In the winter, we use galvanized waterers on top of the heaters in the main poultry yard and then the smaller individual coops get a one gallon heated dog bowl. It works out great!
Also, for those using extension cords in the winter, slip them through pvc pipe to protect them. We also try to keep them high enough off the ground to walk under and not worry about tripping over. They stay dry, too.

You don't use them in freezing temperatures. The water will freeze in the piping and in the valve mechanism for the cup waterer. They are a great help however, in the warmer months as you just fill a large reservoir (5 gallon buckets work great) a couple times a week and don't have the individual waterers to fill and clean daily. The cup waterers also slop much less water into the bedding, keeping it dry and able to absorb more manure for a much longer time.
