I already brainstormed something wondering whether the tubing leading from a 5-gallon bucket to an automatic waterer coiuld be wrapped with heat tape, as is often done with pipes in a barn. Some of you more familiar with that sort of waterer would know better than I.
The bucket itself could certainly be fixed to allow for a bucket heater, which would be well out of reach of the chickens.
I saw somewhere an arrangement with a plain old light bulb placed under something like a large, heavy flower pot (upside down, of course) with the waterer set on top of that. Of course that wasn't an automatic waterer, just the usual fill-and-invert sort--but maybe someone can adapt that to part of an automatic waterer.
Haven't decided yet what to use for mine in winter, but the rolling coop is all set up with a power strip inside, ready to connect to an extension cord run from the house or barn.
