Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: 3 year old boy - which breed to get

Judy, John Blehm in Birch Run Michigan sells pure bred ameraucana chicks that are reasonably priced;  his roosters were gentle too.  He shows, so the chickens with undesirable traits are weeded out as they occur. His chickens are gorgeous too.  Cathryn rainbowsilkies MI

Uh-oh! Sounds like you have caught "the disease". If you're not careful
before you know it you will be up to your eyeballs in chickens and you'll
have so many eggs your neighbors will begin locking their doors lest they
come home and find their fridges full of farm raised eggs. LOL - just
kidding.

I've had Americauna hens for years and they seem to be pretty well mannered,
have been good layers, and live a long time. Plus it's fun to get the green
eggs. I recently got my first Buckeye Red (recently being last spring)
and she is also docile and easy to deal with and she lays a little bit
larger egg that is brown. So either of those breeds might be a good choice.
I'm sure there are others that will work just as well but these are the ones
I'm familiar with.

However, I think it is really the personality of the rooster you need to be
most concerned about. I'm on my second Americauna rooster and am really
happy about how gentle and non-aggressive they seem to be. My DH once
brought home 25 unidentified chicks from a sale and about half of them
