Lots have been said on the subject, I'm a bit late in catching up. I have LOTS of books, some very technical, but books can only do so much. As an example, I bought a car, and I bought the manual. I can read the manual, I can follow the instructions, but there is so much left out that I certainly couldn't use the manual without the help of someone who has experience. And to be honest, even though it's written in my language, much of it is greek to me.
This is where the power of the greater community comes to help, not only in interpretation but also in support. Books are not very good at consoling or encouraging. It's that power of connection that makes the difference. Community is why many of us are on these yahoo groups. Some can give help, some need help and together our chicks get better care for it. And the occasional jokes help get us back out of our anxiety attacks.
I'm on one forum for dogs that everytime we get a newbie, we get the same question. You know it's coming if it's not in the initial post. It's a place to connect and help with the anxiety of being in a foreign world. It helps validate what they've heard or read, or get them going in a new direction.
I ask questions in all sorts of areas that I "think" I know the answer to. I do that so I can hear if others have different ways of thinking about a problem or a different perspective. It helps me see the situation in a different light, and it helps me grow. This is one of the reasons I LOVE this list, someone always has a twist on their ways of keeping chicks or a bit of good ole advice, the kind you can only get from someone that's been there.
