[CHICKENS-101] Re: How to manage free range egg laying in odd places? And a Kumquat Jelly quest

I just made one of those this evening. I found a 5 gallon bucket with top. Put 2 quarter size holes at the bottom sides and bolted the bucket to a planter base so the food drips out into the planter base which allows for a 1 or 2 inch circular feed trough. What should I do with this monstrosity. Does it go on the ground or should it be hung in the coop near a roosting branch? I think I read some place that food should be place above the ground??

And I made it while making Kumquat jelly. Which brings me to an unrelated question. I'm new to jelly making. I usually just blend the kumquats and then boil them with an equal amount of sugar. I end up with rinds, seeds, etc... This time I had the blend in the freezer leftover from last time and when I cooked it for what seemed less time than before, but with more sugar, for some odd reason the grinds seemed to disappear into the jelly. I'm miffed, but happier. Was it the freezing? Was it the extra sugar? I want to be able to repeat this success.
