Susan, It would be great if Allen was close to you. Maybe you'd hatch for him and he could buy silkie chicks from you? Your silkies are nice sized, not over large, but just right for a child. In Allen's shoes, I'd attend the breeder's club and get some nice show bird culls. :>):

I agree with George and Cathrine. We have had chickens for several years. I wanted to experience different colored eggs so we have a Splash Maran pair, a couple of Auracauna hens, a couple of Buff and Lavendar Orpington hens, a couple of cochins, a trio of Polish, a few Silkies, 1 Leghorn hen, a trio of Seramas, and a few more. My son (6) loves the Silkies and has a couple from Catherine. They are small, calm and fun for him to take care of. The Polish are a little more fiesty, but lots of fun. The Seramas are the smallest and very friendly. Broody also. The bigger breeds are all friendly. I guess you can tell that we don't take breeding or showing seriously, but we do enjoy our chickens and they are well take care of. In exchange, we have dark brown/reddish eggs. green, blue eggs, light brown eggs, a pinkish egg (polish), and white eggs.
We are planning to add a couple of more breeds this spring. A couple of Black Jersey Giants for sure. No more roosters. We may incubate some eggs also. Tommy wants a couple of ducks so that may happen. We live in a rural neighborhood so have to be careful about noise, etc. So far, so good. Neighbors like the eggs.
Enjoy and have fun with your peeps and your son. BTW, where are you in Fla.? We are about 30 miles east of Atlanta and would love to have you visit.
