Re: [CHICKENS-101] Raising chicks the natural way, HOW TO PLEASE!

Oh, dear, what have I done!     Well, moving right along........... the chicks have to learn where they need to go at night.  They don't have the mama hen with them to show them the ropes?   Put them into their little secure place to sleep and shut them in it.  If there isn't a door, put something there to keep them in and prop a brick against it till morning.  You may have to do this for several weeks.  Their brains are slow to mature.  (I made that up, I know nothing about chicken brains and maturity, just what I've observed.)

Don't beat yourself up that it may feel like your cart is before your horse, it really does take a while to learn how fast they outgrow a space.  I had 27 in a hutch I had to buy because they rapidly outgrew their plastic storage tub and then a couple weeks later they had outgrown their hutch and I bought a 2nd one of those, which is great, only now I want to move them out to the chicken area and have no good place to put them.  So tomorrow I'm picking up a 5X10 ft. dog kennel to assemble and make them a place to live.  And I guess they will get my dog's crate to sleep in until I can come up with something better.  So ya see how it goes?  You just inch forward at first figuring out the details as you make progress.

So where did the "poor rabbits" go?

Ok, one year of these dern 2 leggeds running my life and Georgia talking me into getting eggs for the broody hen, now I'm in need of some more advice.

I was ok till the eggs hatched and I went bonkers.  I went and got more chicks and now at one month they can't live in the rabbit hutch anymore.  I made a run for them inside the chicken yard and put two covered cages for them to sleep in.  (did they go there tonight?  NO, and the dern turkeys dug a hole under their coop instead of going in, GAAK!)

All I can think is I'm crazy.  And that this must be easier!  For folks that have roo's, and hens hatching their own eggs, how is your set up?  Certainly not everyone is taking their broody hens and kicking poor rabbits out to tend to the new comers.

Thankfully, spring comes but once a year!  Maybe in 12 months time I could gain some more chicken sense, and a better set up.
