We use that same feeder. It is meant to be suspended above the ground by a rope, wire, chain, etc. We use chain scrounged from one of those cheapo steel swingsets someone was throwing away. The feeder manufacturer makes a plastic cover that keeps chickens from trying to perch on top of the feeder. I got mine from Meyer Hatchery one day when I was there because I was tired of chicken $#!+ in the feed. You slide the chain up through the cover and the cover just rests on the top bump in the handle. Other manufacturers offer a galvanized steel cover that does the same thing or you can easily make one out of a Frisbee by drilling a hole big enough for the chain to pass through. The cover is intended to flop around if a chicken tries to perch on it. To refill with feed you just slide the cover up the chain.

YIKES! Went to feed and water my RIR chickens this morning and one was stuck head first in a food container! Not sure how long she was stuck in there, but she couldn't turn around or figure out how to back out of the container. I took the container apart and she came right out. She seemed a little stressed out and very thirsty. Here's some pictures from earlier...... Nance
