Re: [CHICKENS-101] crazy activity

I think they eat feathers if they are missing a nutrient or bored? I can't remember....maybe they need more protien or more room and some scratch? I'm new to chickens too but I think I remember reading stuff like that...

How did the eggs taste? :)

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] crazy activity

hi, my names bill, i just joined today because i cant figure out some crazy behaviour of my chickens and this group was recommended to me.
i have americanas that are 7 months old. they just started laying last week. i have 9 hens and 1 rooster and only 2 of them are laying. i was feeding them a mixed feed from the local feed and seed and no eggs, so i switched to purina laying crumbles 9 days ago and presto had two eggs three days later, but no one else is laying.
well, yesterday, i sat next to the yard and watched for awhile, i saw one go around to several others and pull feathers off their butts and eat the feathers she pulled!!! i have never seen that before. she did this to several before she was run off by one of them.
im just wondering if anyone has any advice for the lack of laying problem and what is going on with that crazy hen.
