I have a "slow-to-freeze" wild bird waterer that might work for the chickens, although it's rather small. About the size of a large dog bowl, lid with a 1 or 2 inch hole in the center, I think with an insulating space, plus it's black so it will absorb what little sunlight heat there is. Of course it only works outside, *in* the sun--inside it would insulate slightly better than an open waterer. I would think it might be good for someone with just a few hens.
Now if only I could remember what it's called so others could locate it... <g>
