Maybe he is all ready to make broody noises to his girls in the morning to lay in the boxes. Mine will make a nest and call their hens to lay there.

Went to put the biddies to bed tonight... All but one lined up on the roosts, one in a nest box. OK, thinks I, maybe she's getting ready to start laying!
Then the nest box occupant turned around. Long graceful tail feathers. It was one of the two roos. Wonder what he thinks he's going to do in there? (Oh, and it was the box with the china egg...)
Maybe it was the cockerel that *wasn't* trying to crow this morning. Hiding in shame...
