I LOVE my Barred Rock girls too! I have 5 right now, and they are about 9 months old and are wonderful layers, not mean either. Funny enough my EE roos are my favorites, they have these cute little crows, I call the one I'm keeping mini me, cause he's got a mini sounding crow.
I wish we were closer to TC, but then I'd probably be really really broke, lol. I know that the local feed stores order from Ideal, but after last years dealings with the one and their lies about the breed and sex of what I bought, then them laughing at me and telling me I'd have to just 'suck it up' when I asked about returning them since I clearly didn't want roosters, I won't buy from them again. The locals here are iffy too, as to whether they are telling you the truth about their chickens and ages, cause they will lie to make a sale, so I'll just keep to my mail order. I ordered from Cackle last year and had placed an order for 27 chicks total, I got 29 in the bunch, the two roosters I'd purposely ordered were marked, (and I got an extra barred rock pullet and and extra red chick), and although two of the 11 reds were roosters, I was pretty pleased. I'd ordered extra because everyone had said be prepared to loose a few chicks and they all made it, and this was with being shuffled from my mom's house in town to our house (that lost power soon after I got them home) and then back to my moms. We were right in the middle of the Rock House fire, so I really consider myself lucky with them all.

I've been glad to have all the reports about the various experiences with chick shipments--both so I know what to expect, and what various companies might be like.
I know that both the Blue Seal store near us, as well as Tractor Supply, take chick orders (I'm in N.H.) Anyone had experience with either one? At present, we're looking at getting Barred Rocks... <g> My husband's choice, I figured I'd pre-select the several that are cold-hardy, good at foraging, and gentle (as well as good layers and dual purpose), and then let *him* think he was getting to choose--and that's what he liked!
