We only have had a brief problem with our RIR rooster (so far) and the hen is an angel.. but this only our limited experience..
If I could do my flock with out anyone elses input.. i would do Buff Orps and/or New Hamphire reds... but we are newbies ourselves ( less than one year experience) ...
Both are fair/good layers
