Another way, besides leg bands to decide who to send to freezer camp and who to keep for laying, would be to check the pelvic bones. There are web sites that can be more specific, descriptive, and possibly provide pictures. Basically hens pelvic bones get more narrow as they get older and stop laying. The pelvic bones start widening before they start to lay. My younger girls are also a more golden color while my older ladies are blonder (not sure if that's something all Buff orps do or not).
The pelvic bones part may be the best indicator on who to keep. Mostly because some hens may never be good layers while others may lay well even as they reach older age.
