I recommend that everyone who wants to raise their own food--crops or animals, for personal use or for sale--get a copy of Joel Salatin's "Everything I Want to Do Is Illegal."  Amazing tales of how the government at all levels is trying to squash local food in favor of industrial agriculture. 
 
Yeah, "protect" does NOT mean forcing us to have every decision made for us, by someone who smugly "knows" that they know better...
