I totally understand, and honestly, I'm a chicken newbie. Got my first hen last March-she was a abandonment that the previous people left, then added a freecycle rooster and it's kind of snowballed from there. But I will say that around here, if you don't order through the mail, you are kind of screwed on getting chickens that are decent. I tried the buying grown hens thing, got 6, what was supposed to be 1 yr old hens, turned out to be 2+ and they laid horribly last summer, I'd get maybe 2-3 eggs a day if I was lucky from 7 hens, and one of those girls is the original one that was here and I know she laid every day, so the other 6 were kind of wasted money. Then I bought 4 8-week old supposed red star pullets from my feed store and they turned out to be RIR roosters, and the feed store guy laughed at me when I asked him to take them back at at least half the purchase price, cause he'd out and out lied about it to me. So yeah I got burned pretty good. Later on my brother bought some from a different lady and she was batty honestly, and the breed she told us the white ones were they aren't, apparently cause I can't find them on the MM site. But then she also tried to tell me that several fuzzy maybe week old chicks if that, were like 8 weeks old too, lol. But oh well lesson learned, won't do that again, at least when I did order these babies, I got what I ordered mostly (I still can't tell the different breeds in the red hens, lol but they lay wonderfully like they are supposed to, so I'm not upset at that), other than two of the reds turned out to be roosters, but that is a lot better than dealing with anyone locally, or from my past experience of it last year. And I know I would be pretty hard pressed to get locally again, even from a feed store. So now this coming summer I'll be saddled with 6 hens that are too old to lay (I lost one several weeks ago), and really don't know what I'm gonna do with them. They can't fly, they are still bald (and I know it's not the rooster cause they spent a lot of time without one around them), and no one wants them, and I'm not gonna follow the path of being dishonest to others about getting rid of them. They may just get to go out to the horse pens with Luck the barn rooster, that way they can at least hopefully eat the bugs and it will give him his own flock.

We had just moved to the area so I was worried that the PO wouldnt handle it correctly ( I also was unaware how often ppl ship chickens)
but my PO was great.. .I called them the night before to confirm they had my number (in case it wasnt clear on the box) and told them to feel free to call as soon as they got it ( which in their case could have been as early as 5am) they called me about 7am and I got them warm and chirping at 7:20
I feel bad that some of these threads have turned into anti-mail order rants... I realy wasnt THAT aggravated .. just wish they had included a "packing slip" of what they DID include so I had some idea
All in all we were very happy with MM .. now, had I ordered 100% one breed and got something else mixed in I would have been more bothered...
