I kept a Modern Game chick and Polish chick indoors for the first six months of their lives. I got them as day olds and they were bonded to each other. When the weather got nice and I got more Game chicks, I put them out in a chicken tractor. The Polish looks a little out of place, but she is happy. I collect eggs from her and the Games……….very cute white eggs.
While they were indoors, they lived in a wire dog crate sitting on a table in the kitchen. I covered them at night to allow them dark/nap time. The Polish was very vocal and would announce her egg! It was then that I realized she would be better off outside.
I let them roam around the house and they would watch tv. Our dogs got very used to them and never bothered them, but I had to supervise.
I don’t know why people looked at me as if I was cracked in the head because I had house chickens. Nobody thinks anything weird about parrots in the house!

Subject: Re: [CHICKENS-101] Another Newbie!
for me personally, when I’m ready, I’d like chickens that will serve multiple purposes – primarily as egg layers but I want birds that have good temperaments (friendly “pets”) and nice colors as I would use shed feathers for various art projects.
This is going to sound nuts, but does anyone keep their chickens in the house? A neighbor friend of mine told me of her set up from many years ago when she had six chickens as pets/egg laying and set up a section of the basement for keeping them. She never mentioned issues with smell or neighbors complaining – in fact, nobody even knew she had them! Of course this is going back twenty years or so... she didn’t recall the breed but said they were friendly, she had them from young chicks, and the oldest lived to be 14.
I’m not completely clueless with birds – I had a parrot for many years and lovebirds and budgies so I know how the pecking order can be even with small cage birds.
