Are they not supposed to eat the tomato? Or the tomato plant? Cause when my chickens sneak into the garden, they devour every last tomato. But not the plant... I don't have cabbage to offer them...

Nightshade plants are potatoes, tomatoes and egg plant, plus some peppers.  Purple cabbage and regular cabbage are both fine for our chickens.
