Re: [CHICKENS-101] All purpose feed? does it exist

 

Would an all-purpose feed be a good thing, though? It seems to me that
there would be kind of a "super feed" for the layers. Those poor hens
are always pregnant, you know? If you keep birds for show and
breeding, the focus of the feed wouldn't be making sure the chicken is
healthy enough to lay all the time. If they're meat birds, there would
be a different focus for nutrients.

Which brings me to a question I've been meaning to ask. Every creature
is what it eats, and is only as healthy as the food that goes into it.
(She says, sipping diet coke.) Would it make sense to mix your own
feed? This struck me when I was researching animal food. Even with the
best of ingredients, the whole factory aspect of it bothers me. Heat
from friction destroying nutrients, the machine part of it makes me
think of oil getting into the feed, and other problems inherent in the
manufacture of food on a large scale.
