I would theorize it being more a problem with the mowed grass being so long and abundant and them eating it like spaghetti causing the compacting.
They can't prechew into smaller pieces, so it just piles up in their crop like a big ol' traffic jam?

When they eat it in the field, they are plucking bits and pieces from grass rooted in the ground giving the resistance they need to shred it themselves, so the pieces are much smaller and easier to digest and not in over abundance.

Maybe if you had a "mulching" mower or some way to shred it into smaller pieces and then provide in moderation??

What do you think? 'Cause I've thought about doing this on occasion when our chicks are older, but hadn't thought about it causing problems until now.
