My neighbor's friend (or cousin, not sure which one my neighbor was
telling the story about) was quite reactive to poison ivy...until he ate
a bunch of it. It made him very very sick for a while, but now it
doesn't bother him one bit.

In our southwest hot pepper eating contest are regular events. So the difference is natural stuff against chemicals. You can only carry this so far. There are a lot of natural things out there that can fry your insides, if you know what I mean. Sometimes our animal cousins can eat things we can't. Some people are seriously affected by common plants.
