Lori,
I have only been loving chickens since Spring of 2007. I cannot tell you how many times I have cried for them, from itty bitties to full grown hens. I even considered not having them after an unusually high loss of shipped day olds. (17 of 25 dead and a few more died within 48 hours) My daughter and I trying our best to save them, only to have them die in the palm of our hands.
One day, someone with more experience and a tougher exterior, told me that if I intended to continue raising livestock………I had better accept there will be deadstock. Honestly, I hadn’t thought about the ones we would lose! In my zest for adding all these barnyard animals to our farm, not once had I given any thought to the ones that would die or have to be put down.
I still cry for them. The ones I try to save and can’t. The ones I never knew were sick. The ones that were in the wrong place at the wrong time and were killed.
You did your best and you tried harder than many would. Something was wrong with Romeo and sadly, you had to learn the lesson that comes with owning livestock. I am sorry and I do feel your pain. Feel good in that you were a very caring and compassionate caregiver to him.
To those that don’t get it……and they may NEVER get it………..don’t worry about them. WE get it. Keep loving your feathered friends and remember Romeo with love.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Rooster with Prolapse
Romeo passed away yesterday, when his crop didn't empty yesterday morning, I knew it was just a matter of time, he was lucky, he fell asleep and just never woked up....No convulsions or nothing horrible..
As I'm burying him, I'm of course crying again, (you guys must think I'm a huge baby by now), but no one in my house gets it, perhaps it's me. But I get laughed at and hear things like "MOM, it's only a chicken". I don't get it? What exactly is so funny about Romeo passing?? They didn't laugh when our Mastiff passed away 6 years ago?So I have learned to just keep to myself.
