RE: [CHICKENS-101] chicken feed ingredients.

Goals- I am trying to avoid GMO's and chemically based feed. I want healthy
chickens, eggs and therefore meat for us.

Currently I am feeding Purina. The only thing I had found available. They
had a recall on a bag of chick feed I had just bought.

The ad appealed to me because it was guaranteed GMO free, they also have a
cheaper version but no guarantee.

I have now found that there is a southern states near me that has chicken
feed. Just don't know if that would be better than Purina.

Thanks

Valerie in Va.

At 17%, this feed falls within established parameters for commercial lay
feed. Chickens are not obligate carnivores so can survive on a vegetarian
diet - in fact, there are people who pay extra for eggs from hens fed a
vegetarian diet! (Why I have no idea, but they do.)

The two main ingredients are byproducts. It has a lot of
vitamins/supplements, including even probiotics. I wouldn't feed it, but I
wouldn't feed any commercial feed. J

It doesn't say if the =grain products= or =plant protein products= include
corn or soy if that is important to you. It does not state anything is
organic. Does the package say anywhere that it does not contain any GMO
ingredients? (Because if not, you can't count on it, even if someone is
telling you that.)

What is YOUR goal in feeding your hens? What are you currently feeding, why
are you looking at other feeds, what about this feed appealed to you?

Once you know your goals, you can start comparing feeds to your goals, see
how they stack up. That should help you decide what you want to feed.

JMO,

Jean and the Happy Hens
