[CHICKENS-101] Re: composting

 

Hi Sandi,
I have a compost too and being new to chickendom, have just this year put in the poo and shavings. The floor of the outside run is dirt and I regularly rake it and deposit that into the compost. Being such a warm winter we decided this week to clean out the old litter and put in a fresh base. It was breaking down nicely but had some wet areas and was beginning to stink. The eggs were getting dirtier and dirtier. Amazing how happy that made the girls! We put most of the litter into the compost and turned it nicely. My garden is going to love me! I also put whatever I wouldn't give my family or chickens into the compost. It's the best looking I've ever had in the 3 years I've been composting. And the most. Not looking forward to what looks like a dry hot summer tho....
