Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Lentils, kidney beans and other problems with legumes.....

So I accidently did the right thing when I cooked the lentils, etc. and added it to the chicken feed!   My chickens enjoy tofu (just like me) but only get it as a treat.  Like they say, "EVERYTHING in moderation.  SUsan

With a very few exceptions ALL  legumes commonly used for feedstuffs (peas, beans, lentils, soybeans) contain sufficient quantities of various anti-nutrition factors to affect nutirition - which is why they should NEVER  BE FED  RAW.

Kidney beans contain a Vitamin E antagonist, Lima beans contain large amounts of a compound that makes hydrogen cyanide (gas chamber gas), soybeans contain factors that block the absorption of copper, iron, manganese and zinc as well as Vitamin B-12.

ALL legumes also contain trypsin inhibitors - trypsin is an important enzyme in converting large chain molecule proteins to smaller more absorbable polypeptides.

Cooking or roasting usually destroys the anti-nutritive factors. In the case of soybeans, fermenting (making tofu) also does the job.
