RE: [CHICKENS-101] Sick Chicken: Please Help

>The day before I came home I was told she had just started to drink more properly again on her own.  I gave her a couple tube feedings for good measure after I returned, then I noticed she was able to eat things like spaghetti and eggy rice on her own with some extra time and space away from the others.

Martha, thank you so much for the update and what you have done so far.

>Now, she has rebound from a low of 7.8 oz Wednesday and is now up to 11.9 oz five days later.  She has  been eating and drinking on her own, foraging with the flock.

that is so good to hear, I am also introducing mine who is a bit over 4 months old now to the flock and as I hoped that she will be more likely to eat more normal if she sees the others eating, she is doing that, she is now eating some stuff she never tried before. She is having a hard time though with the other hens who are not very welcoming and she has no buddies to hang out with.

> but continue the diatomaceous earth for the time being and the Red Cell (which probably helps control any dust from the DE within the feed).  I had done some Baytril before I left, but being out of town 3-4 days there was no way to administer a proper course and I did not continue when I got back.

I might give the DE to my flock to see if it makes a difference, can't say I am a big believer in it, but I always have some on hand just in case

>So, I still dont know exactly what were dealing with or which interventions are primarily responsible for the improvement,  but she seems to be coming around.

well, sometimes we just don't know.

>Im really wondering if it is the diatomaceous earth and something worm related like gape worm or hairworms that is at the root of all this.  Its the only thing I can figure at this point.

mine was only 3 weeks old when her problem started, so I am pretty sure it wasn't worms, there just wasn't enough time for any of those worms to get that bad, I  did use oral ivermectin as soon as she started having her problem, it didn't help

>  Ours is just lucky to be alive at this point, having such new and inexperienced parents (We have no idea what were doing, God help them! LOL)
we all need to start somewhere, I say you did a fine job
