If you ask 10 people, you'll get 10 different answers. I've read and asked,
so I just do what I feel comfortable with. I keep an old potato peeler by
the sink. I scrap any debris off the egg under running hot water. This
goes quickly. I believe they shouldn't soak in water. The shells are
porous and water will get in which will contaminate the egg.
I took a poultry class and heard a speaker say that they didn't have to be
washed, but HE washed his because he knew where they came from. (don't we
all).
One neighbor gives away eggs soiled. He doesn't clean them at all, which I
think is a bit crude.
Another neighbor (in her 70s) says she remembers her grandfather wiping each
egg with a damp cloth.
Someone else said to wash them removes the "bloom" and they won't keep as
long. Sometimes, depending on how I feel, I put the eggs away just as they
are if they're spotless.

So what is the deal? Washed or not washed and if washed, How? I am not
going to be selling any of my eggs at this point, they would be just for our
private use.
