Back about 12-13yrs ago; I had a big Golden named "Ben;" who was a gentle, protective soul; he used to lie down in my nursery pen; & I'd toss chick feed all over him; the chicks would swarm him; he'd lie there quite content while the chicks ate the feed, & the frequent flea from off his body.
The only danger the chicks were ever in; was that massive wagging tail; that would send them flying across the pen if they got in it's way. For a dog that was a bird dog by nature; he was so gentle around them & protective of the whole flock against coyotes; he wasn't so good against the coons, & possums & other small predators; I assume their scents were already in the yard & he assumed they belonged there..
I'd love to have the Big Lug in our lives again; but he wasn't a good traveler; so we found him a good local home when we moved south to Florida; by now he'd be a grand old man.....

He seems to think they're his own personal PEZ dispensers, and will even nudge them on the bum hoping they'll dispense another tasty "chicken nugget". (I try not to think about it too much . . . not MY kind of nugget!)
