Subject: [CHICKENS-101] New chicks
Last summer dogs killed most of our chickens. Since then, we've changed the coop arrangement so our livestock guardian dogs have access to the roosting area at night so safety has been restored.
I had only 2 chicks survive out of 80 eggs purchased off of e-bay probably because of my ignorance with the first 2 batches with my new incubator.
I ended up purchasing 2 dozen "eating" eggs that had been washed that were cooper marans, golden Wyandotte, silver Wyandotte, and Americanas; rumpless bantys and regular. It was getting expensive buying all those eggs and then throwing them away. So, thought I'd try the eggs sold for eating and at least if I had to throw them away, it would be a cheaper investment! The nice seller said they were fertile and wished me luck.
Three days before the hatching date, my electricity went off and the incubtor was down to 81. Well, thankfully, the chicks survived and are hatching! I have 12 chicks so far and lots more with little holes in them. Whew...this was a tough project.
I also have a banty hen with 10 chicks that hatched a week ago outside.
Just wanted to share some good news for a change.
Thanks
