RE: [CHICKENS-101] Chickens as Pets, Really?

Mjacobbe,

I know it is disappointing and shocking the first time you witness this behavior.  Try not to take it personally………it’s a “strongest survive’ world for chickens, so they have to be a$$es about it.

My first experience of “chicken carnage” was when our pet turkey, Lily, sat on a Guinea egg for four weeks and hatched a snow white guinea.  We found the poor thing mauled and desecrated by the chickens…..tossing it into the air.  It made me so mad, sad, sick, etc.  My poor Lily tried so hard to be a mom and they killed her wee baby.  SO, I went out and bought three turkey poults and gave them to her.  She  was mama to those turkeys……….would shield them under her wings.  It was very sweet.

The most important thing I have found when introducing chickens to an already established flock is to make sure there is plenty of room and space for the new chicken to flee to and hide if it needs to.  Getting caught in the corner of a pen is bad bad bad.  They can really be hurt.
